Do you want to know where our “Gaming On The Shoulder of Giants” slogan comes from? Well as anyone in any creative industry knows there is rarely a completely original thought: everything is built upon the foundations of the ideas set down by those who have gone before. In turn we will do the same for the next generation; recycling and rebooting those stories we love, or borrowing ideas from many places and bringing them together in new ways. This is the creative cycle. As the great Oscar Wilde said “Talent borrows, genius steals”.
We at Hermit Studio believe in easy to use games with real substance: matching the complexity of Old School RPG’s with paper, models, and dice for example, but modernised with today’s technologies so they are accessible to everyone. These are games we grew up on, these are the giants we stand upon now to continue the cycle of great gaming. This is why we choose the slogan ‘Gaming On The Shoulder Of Giants’ as a sign of respect for those who have gone before us.
Since this blog has needed the banner redone for a while now, we managed to put up a new one yesterday with this slogan in mind. It’s just a first attempt. What does everyone think? Is the font legible enough?
It’s been a while since we had an update at this blog, as there has been a bit more activity on the photography and main studio blog as of late. A lot of it too has been down to business setup since we have finally registered the studio recently and have a lot to do to get this ready for September 1st when we start officially trading.
Because of this diversion in energy away from the Cyrano Against The One Hundred game we have had some time to reflect on the progress of the game so far: we have about 75-80% of the first phase game mechanics (although we have many plans for expansion in future versions), the next really big job is going to be the graphics boost as they say in game dev story. We have come to the realisation there is a lot more work here than we planned and know we will need to out source most of it (unless we hear from some willing Volunteers or get Donations) and it is going to be costly.
So instead we have decided to put a pin in Cyrano development and work on a couple of smaller 2D games to hopefully raise the funds needed to put towards the Cyrano project later on. In a way it has been good going through this process learning Unity, PlayMaker and iGUI on the job whilst developing the Cyrano Against The One Hundred game, as it means we have a better understanding of how to design and develop the new games: one of which will be a puzzle game and another a ‘pick your own adventure’ style game.
Although we are not ready to reveal the full game concepts yet, once we are you will be the first to know 😀
We recently accquired an Idea Paint whiteboard space on our studio wall (see this post for more details) and after the week of curing had completed we put it to good use for the Cyrano: Against The One Hundred game project.
We have worked out a 30 node campaign map that the One Hundred will be spread over, so there is on avereage 3-4 opponenets per node and the classes within the One Hundred and it’s distribution. Each node on the map is represcented by a game board with a setting based on the it’s location. We are quite execited by it 🙂
